Children's Hägnan

At the open-air museum Hägnan, children are especially important guests. Inspired by our local history, we’ve created play environments where experiences, play, imagination, and creativity take center stage.

Summer at children's Hägnan

During the summer season, from mid-June to mid-August, we open our play areas and the entire courtyard outside Peri-Hanschagården transforms into the Children's Hägnan – a special place for kids. Here you'll find the children's own country store and play café, the old schoolroom, a small barn with wooden animals, and a favorite for many – the hay jumping area.

Next to Peri-Hanschagården is Linné’s play cabin, filled with traditional toys, play equipment, and instructions for old-fashioned games. Try walking on stilts, throwing horseshoes, sack racing, and challenging each other in tug-of-war.

Throughout the summer, we also offer animal tours for children, family-friendly guided tours, a children's flea market, and fun-filled play and competition days. Keep an eye on the event calendar so you don’t miss anything.

School Holidays at Hägnan

During the autumn break, winter sports break, Easter break, and on Walpurgis Night, we invite you to take part in various activities both indoors and outdoors. You’ll find all the details in our event calendar!

Activities can range from historical adventures to creative workshops, baking for children, and ski races for the youngest.

Barnens Hägnan is located in the courtyard outside Persi-Hanschagården. Look for the yellow dance pavilion in the area, then follow the path to the left of it down toward Peri-Hanscha. Tip: Follow the sound of playing kids.

We grow through shared experiences with others! Our aim is to spark curiosity about local history and culture through encounters with environments, objects, people, and stories from both past and present. Guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, we strive to ensure that children and young people are co-creators in our activities – for example, by influencing the content of our programs.

We also offer a wide range of school programs aligned with the goals of the Swedish curriculum, Lgr 22, and the history syllabus. Starting in the spring term of 2025, we are proud to be part of Luleå Municipality’s cultural initiative Kulturgarantin. This means that many of the municipality’s students in grades 2 and 3 will take part in the school program “On an Adventure in Gammelstad!” You can read more about our school programs here (in Swedish only).

With its unique buildings and outdoor settings, the open-air museum Hägnan offers enriching experiences for visitors of all ages. We celebrate school holidays and seasonal traditions, and organize events and activities for children, youth, and schools. We believe it is essential that the museum’s offerings reflect a respectful, curious, inclusive, equal, and thoughtful view of children. “The best interests of the child” is the guiding principle of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. For us, this translates into the goal: “The best possible museum experience for every child.”

“Hägnan is the perfect place for children in summer, because we create a world where play, history, and imagination meet. Here, children can jump in hay, play in our old country store, try traditional games, and explore our cultural heritage through playful activities. With animal tours, themed days, and open play areas, every visit becomes an adventure – and we want every child to feel that Hägnan is a place to return to, again and again, no matter how many birthdays they've had.”
