Here you will find the answers to the most frequent asked questions before visiting Gammelstad Church Town and the open-air museum Hägnan.

Practical information

No, it's free to visit the area. Occasional entrance fees to the open-air museum Hägnan may occur on some larger events.

You don't need to pre-book your visit, it's an open area that can be visited anytime during the day. We do however recommend you to keep track of our opening hours if you wish to enter a specific building. If you want to join a guided tour or any other of our activities you can book your ticket online on our webpage.

The souvenir shop at the Visitor Center and the country store at the open-air museum Hägnan accept both cards and Swish. In the country store you can also pay with cash. The souvenir shop at the Visitor Center is a cash free store.

No, the nearest ATM is located in Stadsö Centrum (a 15 min. walk from the church town).

Yes, leashed dogs are allowed outdoors but not in any of our buildings.

Smoking is not allowed indoors or in close connection to buildings and other visitors.

No, due to sensitive floor surfaces spikes on your shoes are not allowed indoors in our buildings.

Most animals at the open-air museum Hägnan are only present from late June to mid August. Only the sheep live at Hägnan all year round.

There is one restaurant that is open all year round, Iraj Kyrkbyn Restaurang & Pizzeria. For pre-booked groups there is also Restaurang Kaptensgården. During the summer season and during some specific events in the winter you can also buy coffee and pastries at Kafé Fägnan and Ullas Café.

Toilets for visitors can be found in the Country Store, Kafé Fägnan, Gårdshuset (next to Kafé Fägnan), Visitor Center, Nederluleå church, the toilet building at Skolgränd (behind the old Parish Hall) and the toilet building at Rutviksvägen (behind Arctic Collection). Remember to check the opening hours for each venue before your visit to Gammelstad.

Opening hours for the toilet buildings at Skolgränd and Rutviksvägen:
May 1st-September 30th, 8 am-8 pm.
October 1st-April 30th, 10 am-5 pm.

Nederluleå church is open for visitors on set days throughout the year. Since it is an active church it's often occapied with church services and other church activities outside of its official opening hours. For more information see opening hours.


Transportation and parking

Yes, bus number 9 goes all the way to the church town. You can also take bus number 1 or 2 to Stadsö Centrum, this however requires a 15 minutes walk to get to the church town and the open-air museum Hägnan.

Parking is allowed on referred parking areas. There is no parking fee except during some larger events at the open-air museum Hägnan.


Accessibility

The area is adapted for wheelchairs and prams but during bad weather conditions the accessibility may be limited. We have ramps for the larger farmsteads at Hägnan but not for all outbuildings. Nederluleå church has one adapted entrance and the exhibition at the Visitor Center can be reached by elevator (inform the staff on location if you wish to use it). The exhibition cottage is not adapted but it has a removable ramp that can be used if needed.
