The crofter's cottage

Crofts often lay on the outskirts of the villages and was owned by poor smallholders who leased a piece of land from a landowner in the area, in exchange for day labour.

The building is originally from a farmstead in Porsnäs, where it acted a small residence building. During the 1770s, the house was moved to Lakafors, where it came to serve as a crofter’s cottage. The building consists of three parts: a one-room dwelling, a dairy and a vestibule with an adjoining chamber. This type of building is now used mainly for summer pasture huts, but was common in Sweden in olden times.

Here in the crofter’s cottage, visitors can experience everyday life in a simple 18th Century environment.
