There have been dance floors in the villages on the countryside since the 1880s. The dance floor at Hägnan was built in modern times but displays how they often looked like in the 1920s.

The dance floor was often located in a leafy grove on the edge of the village. A secluded location was advantageous, as some felt that dancing and folk music encouraged a life of sin.The dance floors were used mainly by the young people and when the bicycle became a common means of transport, they could cycle dozens of miles to dance on the most popular dance floors.
