Traditional haymaking

Come and help out with the haymaking at Hägnan, a both fun and educational outdoor activity. See how it was done back in the days with scythe, rake, horse and a manual hay making machine.

Welcome to participate in the traditional haymaking at the open-air museum Hägnan! No prior knowledge is necessary, we will teach you everything you need to know about the craft when you get here. The activity takes place on the meadown next to the museum.

Haymaking on the meadows were an important part of the agricultural tradition. The winter feed produced by the meadow determined how many animals that could be housed over the winter. This in turn gave manure to the fields, where the food was grown. Too little hay could thus mean starvation, while a good supply of winter feed for the animals could in turn provide plenty of food for humans.

The mowing took place 4 - 5 July, approx. 12:00-15:00. This year's mowing is now over. Thank you to all of you who participated. Now we hope for good dry weather.
