Pigs, or swine as they used to be called, were kept for their meat. The pigs were able to live on the household’s waste and so it can be said the waste was turned into new food in the form of ham, sausages and lard.

Many poor families had one or two household pigs that saved them from
starving in the winter. Since pigs thrive in a somewhat warmer temperature than other farm animals, the walls of the pig house were low. The pig house was usually located behind the barn, some way from the residential buildings, since pigs give off a strong smell.

Please note that most of the animals are only present from late June to mid August. Only the sheep live at Hägnan all year round.
