Welcome to the World Heritage Site Gammelstad Church Town and the Open-air Museum Hägnan

Gammelstad Church Town is a remarkable place. Here you will find a medieval stone church located next to hundreds of small red church cottages. And as if that wasn’t enough – located right next door is the appreciated Open-air museum Hägnan with its old, wooden structures typical of northern Sweden. And lots of activities all year round.

This is the place where Luleå once was founded and grew, from a small church and trading place to a real city. When Luleå was relocated because of the landrising during the 17th century the place got known in everyday speech as Gammelstad, which means old town – a name that still lives on today.

UNESCO added Gammelstad Church Town on the World Heritage list in 1996. The area is therefore by its unique surroundings, invaluable for humankind – and will be preserved for future generations. If you do not know why it is a World Heritage Site you will know when you visit!

Walk in the narrow alleys among the church cottages, visit the grand old church and participate in one of our exciting activities. Do you also want to experience this? Great. We will see you in Gammelstad!
